“A moving portrayal of the effects of a wrongful conviction on a young African-American couple.” —Barack Obama

“Haunting . . . Beautifully written.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Brilliant and heartbreaking . . . Unforgettable.” —USA Today

“A tense and timely love story . . . Packed with brave questions about race and class.” —People

“Compelling.” —The Washington Post

“Epic . . . Transcendent . . . Triumphant.” —Elle

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward—with hope and pain—into the future.

Candidate for The Great American Novel

Brilliant, beautifully written, captivating, and powerful. This is one of those books that will sneak into your thoughts long after you put it down, a must-read that is deep without feeling stodgy or ominous.

Girls everywhere

Not impressed

I should have read more reviews before buying. The whole reading letters to and from characters for the entire book was not what I wanted. Also factually even in federal prison the inmates get phone calls to their family. I know this because I actually have family locked up federal maximum security prison. So.... maybe research before acting like visitation and phone calls are banned from prison. Writing is not the only thing you can do.

Great book!!

I hesitated on this one bc not usually my genre, but th rioting and character development were amazing! You will cheer for these heroes and grow to love them!

American Marriage

Not great shallow character development couldn’t wait to finish, but I did.

Worth the buy, maybe not the read 🥴

Everyone loves this book so I would encourage you to try it for yourself (it’s only $8 on Amazon) I personally feel the synopsis gave away way too much & the characters were under developed. I didn’t care about them or their outcomes which made for a boring read 🤷🏽‍♀️

Rukiya777

Magnificent Read

There’s nothing like the sweetness of a great book; it’s almost like having a secret romance. This is one. Such book. You become so engrossed in the characters it’s as though you know them. Magnificent read indeed.

Thought provoking and intriguing

Adored this book, loved discussing this novel with other people who have read it. The book addresses several deep and controversial issues with some much grace and depth. While it is a fiction book it made me think and explore topics. Highly recommended read.

5 stars is not enough

When I started reading this book, I was immediately drawn to all the characters. Roy and Celestial had me under their spell. I understood their stories. Ms. Tayari has done an impeccable job in bringing this story to light. American Marriage is a must read for everyone. I wish there were more stars to give (1,000) if I could.

This book was an amazing read and quick read. If you are looking for a book that will draw your attention and keep you interested this is it.

A Non-Believable Tale

I'd like to ask the writer if she ever heard of DNA testing.

Verne42

Range of emotions

Ms. Jones made you laugh, contemplate, catch an attitude, and just feel. Relationships are complicated. We all know a Celestial, Roy, and Andre whose past, present and future are experiencing simultaneously. Great read.

A great read

Ms. Tayari is an exquisite writer! Loved every minute of this book.

Old good days

Annoying sexism

I found both male characters quite sexist. This issue became exponential in the audiobook, where the actor narrating Roy’s and Andre’s thoughts uses falsetto to imitate the voice of Celestial or Olive. This might have been intentional from his part to best represent the characters and how they emerge to be so conventional in the book. They give the impression to feel superior to and mocking the female characters. Maybe all of this is purposeful, but I would not have expected it from a book published in 2018 and describing a contemporary love story. I felt that the relationship dynamics were too sexist and traditional.

Lady of Literature

An American Marriage

I am a wife of a former inmate. I think the author gave a good depiction of the struggles a former inmate feels when returning to society. However, the characters seems a bid distance and the story lost momentum fairly quickly for me.

meow_shanshan

The ending

I love the beginning but the ending is a little bit too rush...

Ms.Philadlphia

Lacked Depth

I wouldn’t quite describe it as predictable, but the characters lacked something and their choices and the direction on the book seemed to lack complexity or depth. It’s usual for me to read a book and dislike nearly every character. I only finished this book because I don’t like to walk away from a book that I’m reading.

Kim, finding other worlds.

American Marriage

One of the few novels that I have been able to read; that has allowed me to not to take a side. Beautifully describes the gray parts of a tragic happening of two people in love. Life changing!

Atrocious. Can’t even say anything about how bad it is! Best book of 2018? More like worst book of 2018!

An American marriage

I didn’t like this book at all. I listened to it first and didn’t like it but since it had such good reviews I decided to read it to see if I would like it better. I could only read up to the imprisonment before I had to stop. I didn’t like Roy, Andre, or Celestial. I have no idea why this book is so well liked because it didn’t show lots of depth to me and it was predictable. I don’t think Celestial ever loved Roy. She loved what he did for her...he was her muse and helped her with her business. Once he was away, there was nothing there. I don’t think she is capable of true love considering her parents, her affair in college, her marriage, and her affair. The author should’ve sent her to therapy to work out her issues. I don’t think Roy ever really loved Celestial. I think she represented everything he wanted to be and he was drawn to the idea. Andre...ugh...why wait until her husband is imprisoned and then make a move on a married woman when he had his whole life to step up.

One of the best

This book is one of the best books I have ever read and I read a lot. Beautifully written, raw emotion, great characters. Totally real. I loved everything about it. A new favorite author, for sure.

Kiarra Monique

A phenomenal read!

This story felt so wonderfully familiar to me. Not because it was cliche or done a million times, but because the author really made the characters (Celestial, Roy, and Andre) so 3 dimensional that I could relate to them on nearly every level. Speaking of levels, there were so many to this book, as well as themes. Being a black man in America. Being an 'untraditional' black woman in America. Family ties. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that I absolutely loved this book. The deepness of it all translated effortlessly from the pages.

Swift horse woman

Evocative and Riveting

I chose to download this book while on an island vacation for a little “ light” reading. Jones did the miracle which all writers aspire to; she pulled me in and made me feel. I almost stopped reading as the emotional intensity was at a steady but I couldn’t put it down. Very informative and educational into the fear and injustice faced by Afro-American people within an unfortunately prevalent racist society.

KayKamAm

Amazing

I finished the book in two days between tears and laughs. I felt like i was in the book.

Bound by Books

Holding My Breath

For most of the reading, I inhaled and seemed not to breath. Mostly, I was entwined in the character’s heartbreak and circumstances of life. The overriding tragedy of not being safe within the boundaries of the US because of the color of your skin, juxtaposed with lives of people I immediately felt attached to because the words lyrically pulled me through their stories. I did not put this book down, and was sorry to see it end. I wanted more for many reasons.

Page turner

An American Marriage is a page turner. I finished the book in less than 24 hours. Reading it, I felt like I was watching that story unfold in my imagination. So well written. The story captures your soul and makes you want to a happy or peaceful ending for all the characters in the book.

Marriage can’t be defined

This book was amazing! The way in which Ms. Jones captures the characters voices in the letters while unraveling the story is impeccable. This novel was great! The alternating vantage points made the story clip along at a great pace. This coupled with the fact that the characters were flawed but likable, made me need to know what was going to happen to each person next! I finished it in one sitting. Awesome storytelling!

princesst30

Heartbreaking and Beautiful

Tayari Jones outdid herself in this beautifully written and sad tale of what happens to a couple after tragedy strikes. She was able to show the complexity of marriage and what the institution really means in the face of unexpected adversity. Love is easy when things are going well, and so very hard when life unfairly hits a couple and turns their world upside down. This story covers the relationships of class structures, infidelity, and adoptive versus biological parents and how we connect, or don’t connect, based on those relationships. This was an excellent novel.

Question ?

Why does the iBook review need to specify that the newlywed couple is “black”. If they were white, would that be mentioned AT ALL?!
